If you're a fan of grapefruit, you'll love this refreshing, balanced smoothie recipe full of fruit, greens, fiber, and more! This grapefruit recipe is a perfect way to use winter citrus while making a high-fiber smoothie!

    Grapefruit Smoothie with Pineapple

Winter brings prime citrus season! There are so many types of citrus to choose from, but today's smoothie recipe uses grapefruit. Grapefruits tend to be quite the love 'em or hate 'em fruits, but if you're a fan, this smoothie is for you.

The grapefruit tartness is cut with sweet pineapple, for some natural sweetness. Plenty of spinach is added (I'm a huge of adding leafy greens to smoothies!) for more volume, fiber, and nutrients. And speaking of fiber, the chia seeds in this smoothie add a big punch of fiber, in addition to healthy fats and protein. In fact, one serving of this smoothie packs 13 grams of fiber!

How to Make a Grapefruit Smoothie

A vitamix blender full of grapefruit smoothie ingredients.

Since we're using fresh grapefruit, this smoothie can take a minute longer to make, but I promise it's not a big deal!

I've found the easiest way to prep your grapefruit for the smoothie is the following:

    Cut your grapefruit in half.

Slice off the opposite end of the grapefruit to cut through the thick peel to reach the pink flesh.

Then slide your paring knife from top to bottom, slicing off all the peel and pith. And be sure to slice off as much of the pith (the white stuff) as you can, as there's a lot of bitterness here you don't want in your smoothie!

Once totally peeled, pop out any seeds you see and toss the grapefruit in the blender with the remaining ingredients. Then blend away until smooth and creamy!

    Ingredients to Add Extra Flavor

You'll see two optional ingredients in the grapefruit pineapple smoothie recipe below, fresh ginger and fresh mint. I love the bright fresh flavors these two ingredients add to the smoothie, but you don't have to include them if you don't want to or don't have the ingredients on hand.

The ginger adds a nice little kick to kind of wake up your taste buds a little, whereas the mint helps play out the sweetness of the pineapple.

Give it a try and let me know what you think! Take a picture to share it on social media, and tag me (@nutritiontofit and #nutritiontofit)! I love to see you making my creations and always like to re-share photos! Be well, and enjoy!

    Ingredients

    • 1 grapefruit
    • 2 cups frozen pineapple
    • 4 cups spinach
    • ¼ cup chia seeds
    • ½ cup milk of choice (i.e. cow's, almond, hemp, oat, soy)
    • ¼ teaspoon fresh ginger (optional)
    • 2 leaves fresh mint (optional)

    Instructions

    • Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend on high for 60 seconds or until blended smoothly. Add additional ice and liquid to get your preferred texture (more ice will make it colder and thicker, better for using a spoon like in a smoothie bowl, whereas more liquid will make it thinner and more sippable!)
