We’re getting super serious today.
Just kidding! I want to talk about Lip Smackers. Not like the gross annoying habit of smacking your lips (although my baby daughter has started doing this and in typical mom fashion it’s now the cutest thing ever!), but the Bonne Bell Lip Smackers chap stick I grew up with! Was anyone else obsessed with those things? I was. And I was a devoted, unwavering fan to one flavor: strawberry kiwi!
Strawberry kiwi lip smackers are basically synonymous with the late nineties for me. Along with Lisa Frank, Trapper Keepers, and gel pens. That strawberry kiwi love translated everywhere. If there was a strawberry kiwi drink available, I got it. I think I even had a strawberry kiwi candle at one point (too far).
Once I was in high school one of my best friends and I would literally save all of our spare change until we had enough for a smoothie. We always went when we each had $3.52 in change, because we knew that’s exactly what it would cost for the basic strawberry banana smoothie after tax. Except they DID have a strawberry kiwi version but I never got it because it was more money (probably what….twenty five cents? Total cheapskate…)
So that’s where this smoothie comes in. Totally taking it back to my love of strawberry kiwi. And making up for lost time by finally have a strawberry kiwi smoothie!
I made one teensy, tiny ingredient edit, though. I added a wonderful smoothie addition that something tells me would not have been in those strawberry kiwi smoothies back in high school… CAULIFLOWER! We’ve chatted briefly about my love of cauliflower in smoothies before with my Black Forest Grassfed Whey Protein Smoothie. Basically, it doesn’t change flavor, if anything makes the texture just slightly fluffier, and unlike leafy greens it doesn’t change the color of the smoothie.
Which is good. A strawberry kiwi smoothie needs to be pink.
Do you guys have any fun flavor memories from growing up? Play around with that – use it as inspiration in your own cooking! And most importantly, you must tell me what your favorite lip smacker flavor was. I can’t be the only one on team strawberry kiwi out there!
