What’s Dole Whip? (And why you’ll love it!)

Dole Whip, also called pineapple whip or Dole soft serve, is a creamy pineapple soft serve ice cream treat, made popular by its availability at Disney.

It’s deliciously creamy, sweet, refreshing, and has a bright pineapple flavor.

My homemade Dole whip uses just three ingredients and the popular Ninja Creami machine to make a healthy Dole whip that’s (IMO) even tastier, and high in protein, too!

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

For a full ingredient list with quantities, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

ingredients to make a healthy ninja creami dole whip with protein
  • Pineapple in Juice: You need a 20 ounce jar or can or pineapple in juice, but don’t drain it! You need both the pineapple and the juice for this recipe. You could substitute fresh or frozen pineapple chunks, but then you’ll need to add a little extra liquid (such as pineapple juice, coconut water, or extra milk, but know the pineapple flavor is a little less pronounced without the pineapple juice).
  • Protein Powder: I recommend a vanilla protein powder (I LOVE Clean Simple Eats Vanilla Protein Powder). Times when I’ve run out of vanilla protein powder, I’ll substitute a serving of Vital Protein Unflavored Collagen Peptides with a tablespoon of sugar free pudding mix (either in vanilla, white chocolate, or cheesecake flavor).
  • Milk of Choice: I often use Fairlife’s ultra-filtered milk, as it’s a little higher in protein and lower in natural sugars. Coconut milk is an absolutely delicious option, that pairs beautifully with the pineapple. But you can truly use any milk you like to drink!

Step-by-Step Directions

For complete instructions, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

steps to make a ninja creami dole whip
  1. Divide the ingredients evenly between two Ninja Creami pints.
  2. Stir until powders have dissolved, then make sure all pineapple chunks are fully submerged for a smooth surface.
  3. Freeze the pints for 24 hours.
  4. Remove pint from the freezer and let set at room temperature for 15 minutes. Spin on the “lite ice cream” setting, doing a re-spin if needed. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Note: While you don’t have to, letting the pint sit on the counter at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before spinning seems to be a good trick to not need respins and get the perfect consistency on the first spin.

Homemade Dole Whip Variations

  • Mango Dole Whip: add half a cup of frozen mango and an extra tablespoon of milk.
  • Strawberry Dole Whip: Add half a cup of sliced strawberries and an extra tablespoon of milk.
  • Collagen Dole Whip: Instead of protein powder, use one serving per pint of collagen peptides. If they’re unflavored, add a tablespoon of white chocolate, cheesecake, or vanilla sugar free instant pudding mix.
  • Dairy-Free Dole Whip: Use your favorite plant-based protein powder and plant-based milk.
  • No Added Sugar Dole Whip: as long as the protein powder and milk you’re using don’t contain added sugar, this recipe is naturally free of added sugar! That said, there is natural fruit sugars found in the pineapple and pineapple juice.

FAQ:

Why did my Ninja Creami come out crumbly?

When you’re making a light ice cream or protein ice cream in the Ninja Creami, it’s not uncommon for it to turn out rather crumbly after the first spin. Here are three things you can try:

  1. Before spinning, take the pint out of the freezer and sit on the counter for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Put it right back on for a re-spin.
  3. Add a tablespoon of additional liquid, then re-spin again.

Why is my Ninja Creami ice cream too soft?

If your Ninja Creami is too soft, it’s likely because you either didn’t freeze it long enough, or you added too much extra liquid before a re-spin.

Can I use fresh or frozen pineapple?

Absolutely! Add to your pint first (about a cup per pint) and then add liquid until it’s just covered. You can add pineapple juice, white grape juice, coconut water, or more milk.

Do I have to freeze overnight?

You need to freeze at least 8 hours at an absolute minimum.

Can I keep leftover Ninja Creami ice cream?

Yes, but you’ll need to spin it in the Ninja Creami again when you’re ready to eat it again. Before refreezing, just smooth the surface of the dole whip flat. Then freeze and spin again when ready.

Topping Ideas
