Frequently Asked Questions:
What tool are you using to blend the cottage cheese?
In my viral TikTok and Instagram video, I used an immersion blender. Now you can of course use a regular blender or a food processor, but I really do prefer the immersion blender here. With smaller amounts, it helps blend the cottage cheese smoothly and doesn’t result in a lot of cottage cheese stuck on the sides of a blender or food processor. Plus – it’s way less mess! You can even blend your cottage cheese directly in its container, if you want!
Why is my cottage cheese not blending as smooth?
The most common reason is you’re not blending it long enough. Blend for a solid 3-4 minutes. Think it looks good? Blend another 30-60 seconds. That’s the real key to lusciously smooth whipped cottage cheese!
Also, especially if you’re using a blender or food processor – make sure you’re scraping down the sides of the container.
How can I make this dip less thick?
If you want it less thick, thin it with some milk or water. For a little extra flavor, you can also thin it with some lemon juice, vinegar, buttermilk, or even pickle juice (I’m still amazed but the insane number of comments loving pickle juice in this!)
Why is my ranch cottage cheese dip not as thick?
Often it’s because of the cottage cheese brand. If your cottage cheese brand is very watery/ liquidy, it won’t create as thick of a dip. Try straining some of the liquid out before blending, if it really bothers you!
Can I turn this dip into a salad dressing?
Absolutely! Thin with your preferred liquid: milk, water, buttermilk, pickle juice, lemon juice, or vinegar.
Isn’t this too high in sodium?
The thing about sodium (and literally everything with nutrition) is we all have individual needs. Some folks need a lot of sodium, whereas others need to limit. If this is too high in sodium for your needs, try looking for a low sodium or salt-free cottage cheese (this can be harder to find), low sodium or salt-free ranch (like homemade, Flavor God or Spicology).
Storage
Once blended, stir this cottage cheese ranch in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.
Ranch Dip Variations:
- Low Sodium: While these can be harder to find, low sodium cottage cheese is available in some markets. Alternatively you could use plain Greek yogurt, which is naturally lower in sodium. Also be sure to use a low-sodium ranch seasoning, like a homemade spice blend, or Flavor God’s Low Sodium Ranch Seasoning or Spicology’s Salt-Free Really Ranch.
- Gluten-Free: Use a certified gluten-free ranch seasoning (or make your own).
- Lactose-Intolerant Friendly: They can be harder to find, but try using a lactose-free cottage cheese or even lactose-free Greek yogurt to substitute.
- Sub Greek Yogurt instead of cottage cheese for another high protein ranch that’s got a little more tang and less sodium.
- Buffalo Ranch Dip: Add a tablespoon of hot sauce to give buffalo dip vibes.
- Fiesta Ranch Dip: Use a Fiesta ranch seasoning packet, or DIY it with 1 tablespoon taco seasoning and 2 tablespoons ranch seasoning.
- Pickle Ranch Dip: Add 1-2 tablespoons of pickle juice, and if you’re really feeling it, add some chopped pickles, too!
- Fresh Ranch Dip: use fresh herbs, like dill and parsley, to heighten the freshness. Feel free to add a squeeze of lemon juice, too!
- Garlic Ranch Dip: add an extra teaspoon of garlic powder, or some finely minced fresh garlic or roasted garlic.
- Black Pepper Ranch Dip: add a few grinds of freshly cracked black pepper.
- Cucumber Ranch Dip: grate a half cup of cucumber, strain the excess moisture out, then stir it in. A squeeze of lemon goes great with this, too!
