Chocolate Strawberry Banana Smoothie
This chocolate strawberry banana smoothie is rich in chocolate flavor but full of fiber, protein, and healthy fats for a balanced, delicious treat.
The thing that I love about this chocolate strawberry banana smoothie is that it just works. Like – chocolate banana smoothies are delicious. So are chocolate strawberry smoothies. As are strawberry banana smoothies. So naturally, combining all three into a chocolate banana strawberry smoothie is a winning combination!
This banana strawberry chocolate smoothie is also a little more nutritionally balanced for a more gradual impact on your blood sugar, too. On top of the fruit, it has avocado and flax seeds – both of which add more fiber and healthy fats. And you can easily add protein, too!
So let’s make this smoothie!
Ingredients
For a full ingredient list with quantities, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Banana: You need a whole banana – fresh is fine, use frozen banana slices for an even creamier, thicker texture.
- Strawberries: Fresh or frozen both work fine, but frozen fruit always creates a thicker, creamier smoothie.
- Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder adds the chocolate flavor (and actually adds some fiber and iron, too!).
- Avocado: Half an avocado adds fiber and heart-healthy fats.
- Flax Seed: Another ingredient that adds some heart-healthy fat, as well as more fiber for better blood glucose control.
- Milk of Choice: You can use whatever milk you prefer to drink. Unsweetened almond milk keeps this smoothie plant-based and slightly lower calorie, whereas something like ultra-filtered dairy milk will add more protein and other micronutrients, like calcium and vitamin D.
- Sweetener: If you like sweet smoothies, add a little honey or other sweetener of your choice (allulose and monk fruit are great options that won’t impact blood sugar levels).
How to Make a Chocolate Strawberry Banana Smoothie
For complete instructions, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high for 2 minutes.
- Pour into a glass, serve, and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Always blend smoothies longer than you think you need to. I worked at a smoothie shop in college, and when I was training I was surprised to see how long the smoothies were blended! But it made sense, for how smooth and creamy the smoothies were!
- Use frozen fruit for thicker, creamier smoothies. Especially if you don’t want to add ice, which can change the texture, definitely go for frozen fruit.
Substitutions & Variations
- This smoothie is already naturally gluten-free.
- Dairy-free: Use your favorite dairy-free milk.
- High Protein: add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or collagen peptides for a boost of protein. You can use plant-based proteins to keep the smoothie plant-based.
What to Do with Leftover Smoothie
Now we usually don’t have leftovers when I make this chocolate banana strawberry smoothie for my family, but if you do, there’s one amazing way to use your smoothie leftovers: freeze them into popsicles!
All you need is a popsicle mold and some popsicle sticks. Pour your leftover smoothie into the molds, freeze, and then enjoy some nutrient-dense, chocolate freezer pops!
This is such a good hack that sometimes we’ll make this smoothie just to freeze it into freezer pops for a fun, summery treat.
If popsicles aren’t your thing, freeze leftover smoothie in an ice cube tray, then blend frozen smoothie cubes with milk for a fresh smoothie another day.
