Reasons You’ll Love This Recipe:
- Healthier Valentine’s Treat – using more wholesome, nourishing ingredients.
- Fresh Fruit – did you know that dates are actually a fresh fruit? They’re also chewy and delicious and give off kind of caramel vibes.
- No Bake – no oven needed! The only heating is to melt the chocolate, which can be done in a microwave.
- Family-Friendly! My whole family loves these treats!
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions:
For a full ingredient list with quantities, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Medjool Dates – this fruit is fresh, a little chewy, and gives caramel vibes. Make sure you follow the instructions below for how to pit it and turn it into a heart shape!
- Chocolate Nut Spread – fill the medjool date hearts with nutella, chocolate peanut butter spread, chocolate sunflower seed butter, or any other similar option.
- Chocolate Chips – I use semisweet chocolate chips, but you can use dark, milk, or white. You can also use ones with no added sugar or that are dairy-free, to accommodate different allergy lifestyle preferences.
- Coconut Oil – a little is used to help thin the chocolate chips to make the melted chocolate a great dipping and drizzling consistency.
How to Make Chocolate Coated Date Hearts
For complete instructions, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Use a small knife to carefully cut the date in half, length-wise, just enough to remove the pit.
Shape the medjool date into a heart, pinching the uncut bottom into the bottom point of the heart. Place the nut butter into a small resealable bag and fill the bottom and sides of the date, making sure to not overfill it, so it still resembles a heart.
Melt the chocolate with coconut oil. Place each stuffed date into the chocolate, fully coat, and then use a fork to remove, gently shaking off the excess chocolate.
Tips and Variations
- Swap the Chocolate – dark, milk, white…use whatever type of chocolate you enjoy!
- Different garnish – I just drizzled the excess chocolate over the dates, but you could drizzle a different chocolate, sprinkle crushed freeze dried strawberries, use Valentine’s sprinkles, or (a personal favorite) a sprinkle of flaky sea salt.
- Change out the filling – you can use any nut or seed butter, or swap with something like a raspberry chia pudding for an extra little fiber boost.
How to Store
Store the chocolate coated dates in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

Chocolate Coated Date Hearts
Ingredients
- 12 Medjool dates
- ¼ cup chocolate nut or seed butter i.e. Nutella, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate sunflower seed butter
- â…” cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 teaspoons coconut oil
Instructions
- Slice each date halfway, length-wise, and carefully remove the pit. Squeeze the bottom/ uncut portion into the bottom pointed tip of the heart and shape the rest of the date into a heart shape.
- Fill the date with a small amount of chocolate nut butter, making sure it still resembles a heart shape. Place onto a parchment paper lined quarter sheet pan or plate and set aside.
- To a small, microwave safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave for one minute, then stir, then microwave another 30 seconds and stir again. If needed, microwave an additional 10-15 seconds at a time, stirring well between each time, until chocolate is melted.
- Place each date, one at a time, into the melted chocolate, coating it fully. Use a fork to lift the date out of the chocolate and gently shake off the excess chocolate. Return to the parchment paper lined pan. Once all dates are coated, you can drizzle any remaining chocolate on top, or sprinkle flaky sea salt or sprinkles.
- Refrigerate 20 minutes, or until set. Enjoy, and store leftovers in the refrigerator.
