Reasons You’ll Love This Recipe:
Hot honey bowls have been insanely popular on social media for a hot minute, and for good reason – they’re delicious, nutritious, and so easy to make!
This hot honey bowl recipe uses ground turkey instead of ground beef, but you can absolutely sub whatever protein you prefer (even meatless crumbles or crispy tofu).
Adding cottage cheese and avocado both may seem a little strange but I promise, it just works. Plus, all the ingredients together make this an incredibly satiating, high protein, high fiber meal!
Ingredient Notes & Substitutions:
For a full ingredient list with quantities, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Ground Turkey – I use lean 93/7 ground turkey for a leaner protein option here, but you can substitute lean ground beef, pork, chicken, venison, plant-based crumbles, or even crispy tofu.
- Sweet Potatoes – peel, dice, season and roast! The sweet potato flavor is insanely perfect with the seasonings and this recipe, but you can sub white potatoes or even a whole grain like quinoa or brown rice, too.
- Cottage Cheese – low fat cottage cheese adds both creaminess and more protein, making this meal incredibly feeling without weighing you down.
- Avocado – avocados add healthy fats and fiber. You’ll need either one or two avocados, depending on how big they are. For an easy, flavor-packed sub, you can also use guacamole, too.
- Oil – you’ll need olive oil to toss the seasonings with the sweet potatoes before roasting.
- Seasonings – I like to keep things as simple as possible, so I used a taco seasoning blend for both the sweet potatoes and the ground turkey. I also added a little cinnamon to the sweet potatoes, too, because the flavor is divine!
- Hot Honey – last but certainly not least, you need hot honey to drizzle over your bowl before enjoying!
How to Make Hot Honey Bowls
For complete instructions, please check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Peel, dice, season, and roast the sweet potatoes. While they’re roasting, brown the ground turkey. To assemble the bowls, add both the roasted sweet potatoes and browned turkey, along with cottage cheese, avocado, and a drizzle of hot honey.
Tips and Variations
- Change out the protein – use any ground meat, like ground chicken, turkey, pork, venison, lamb, or beef. For meatless options, you can use black beans, tempeh, tofu, or meatless crumbles.
- Add more plants – I’m always a fan of adding more plants! You can add cauliflower rice, diced zucchini, bell pepper, mushrooms, or onions to the ground turkey as it’s cooking. Or you can add some fresh greens and/ or fresh tomatoes on the side when serving.
- Have fun with toppings – top with other flavorful garnishes! See topping ideas below!
Meal Prep: Storing & Reheating
When meal prepping hot honey bowls, I prefer (and recommend) preparing just the sweet potato and meat components. If you’re eating at home, add the cottage cheese, avocado, and hot honey after reheating. If reheating at work, you can pre-emptively add the hot honey to the meat and sweet potatoes, then use a second small container to store the cottage cheese and avocado until after the meat and potatoes have reheated.
Hot honey bowls will last up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator if stored in an airtight container.
Toppings
Of course hot honey is a mandatory topping to hot honey bowls! But try some of these other toppings to change it up, too:
- Lime wedge/ juice
- Cilantro
- Green onion
- Black olives
- Jalapenos
- Pickled onions
- Pico de gallo
- Shredded cheese
- Feta cheese
- Hot sauce
