So, I don’t know if you guys know this about me but I take competition seriously, in the sense that if I’m in, I’m going all in and want to make sure I do my absolute best! I have been spending the past couple weeks testing recipes for the Wild Blueberry Association of North America‘s Wild Your Smoothie Contest, and this smoothie (and one more you’ll see Thursday!) are the top!
Did you know that wild blueberries are total little nutrient powerhouses? One cup packs 80 calories, 25% of your daily fiber needs (double what cultivated (regular) blueberries provide), 200% of your daily value for manganese (important for bone health), and have high concentrations of antioxidants (two times the antioxidants in cultivated blueberries). That’s crazy awesome, right?!
Since they’re typically frozen at peak freshness right after picking, you can find them year-round in the freezer aisle of your local grocery store. The packaging will tell you specifically they’re wild blueberries. Plus, you can tell because they will be smaller in size than cultivated blueberries – they feel a bit like frozen peas.
When tasting the wild blueberries on their own you bite into a burst of bright sweetness with a concentrated flavor and a subtle tartness. They’re juicy and delicious all on their own, so when creating a recipe I wanted to play with flavors and textures to complement the wild blueberries so these tiny little berries would be the star of the show (as they should!).
This Wild Blueberry Creamy Vanilla Smoothie can be enjoyed at any time of day because the ingredients are so stellar. (Note: if you’re enjoying this smoothie as a meal on its own, you may want to add a little vanilla protein powder or pair with some protein on the side for a more complete meal.) Since the smoothie is so silky with an airy sweetness, I’m partial to enjoying it for dessert (or you know, when the mid-afternoon craving for sweets is knocking at your door). I always love that goody-two-shoes feeling of enjoying a dessert with no added sugars, like this dessert smoothie! 😉
Bonus tip for my breastfeeding mamas: with all of the natural sweetness, fiber and healthy fats packed in this smoothie, it should do a good job of satisfying that hormonally-amplified sweet tooth and satiating that breastfeeding hunger by keeping you fuller, longer!

Wild Blueberry Creamy Vanilla Smoothie
- 1 cup frozen wild blueberries
- 1/4 avocado
- 1/3 cup canned light coconut milk
- 1 medjool date
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Puree all ingredients in a blender until fully incorporated (about a minute).
- Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.
