Agua frescas are a fantastic non-alcoholic blended beverage for hot summer days and nights…and Cinco de Mayo! Using mango in this mango fresca is a match made in cool, hydrating drink heaven. The natural sweetness of mango complements the hint of lime and blends incredibly smooth.

So, what’s an agua fresca?

An agua fresca is a non-alcoholic blended beverages of fruit or grains, lime juice, and water. Often there is added sugar in agua fresca recipes. Here, I chose not to add any because mangos are naturally very sweet and delicious on their own!

Is a Mango Agua Fresca Healthy?

As a dietitian, my answer will always be, “it depends” when asked if a specific food is healthy. Why? Because health and what’s healthy is relative and pretty subjective.

But that said, agua frescas are incredibly hydrating and mangoes offer a variety of health benefits, too:

  • Mango is rich in Vitamin A, which helps skin and eye health.
  • Mango is one of the highest sources of Vitamin C, an integral vitamin for your immune system health.
  • Mangoes also have a high water content, fiber, and antioxidants.

Ingredients

Instructions

To make this mango agua fresca, combine all the ingredients into a high powered blender. Next, blend for a minute, or until all ingredients are smoothly pureed together. Then pour in a glass and enjoy!

Feel free to pour over ice if you like very cold beverages. It makes it even more refreshing!

Does it Matter What Kind of Blender You Use?

Any blender works! The most important thing to consider is that your blender is high-powered enough to smoothly blend and puree the fruit/ grains you’re using. Some of the blenders I have used and recommend include (affiliate links):

Mango Agua Fresca Tips & Tricks

Use Fresh or Frozen Mango

The cool thing about this agua fresca is that both fresh and frozen mango work! And bonus? Frozen produce is just as nutritious as fresh! (And often more affordable and more convenient – no need to worry about peeling and chopping a whole mango!)

I recommend thawing your mango at least slightly before blending. Just 30-45 seconds in the microwave should do the trick!

Want it Sweeter?

Mango is a pretty sweet fruit on its own, but if you want a sweeter mango agua fresca, sweeten to your preference! Traditionally cane sugar is used to sweet agua frescas, but you can use a variety of sweeteners:

  • Regular cane sugar
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Agave syrup
  • Honey
  • Non-nutritive sweeteners, like stevia, allulose, or monk fruit

I don’t recommend maple syrup – changes the flavor too much!
