Apple Cranberry Sauce

Apple Cranberry Sauce

Try this cranberry sauce recipe with no refined sugar for a sweet and refreshing option at your next holiday gathering.

The first holiday season I tried making a homemade cranberry sauce my husband quickly became obsessed, and I can easily see why! With upwards of a cup of sugar in the recipe, of course it will taste sweet and delicious! Every year since he asks that I make more homemade cranberry sauce, and every year I try to subtly alter the recipe to make it a little less of a sugar bomb. Well, this is the recipe that I finally feel happy with from an ingredient and a taste perspective! Not only is this cranberry sauce free of major allergens, but it’s also free of refined sugar! The natural sugars in apples make the cranberries play a little sweeter on the palate. You have the option of adding maple syrup at the end to enhance the sweetness a little more if you desire. This is now a recipe that I have no reservations about sharing with my family! Merry Christmas, and be well!

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • ½ cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 2 cups apple juice
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place cranberries, applesauce, and apple juice in a small sauce pan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Continue to boil for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, while allowing much of the liquid to be reduced down.
  2. Taste to check for desired sweetness, and add maple syrup if needed. Remove from heat and cool completely.
  3. Transfer to a covered storage container and refrigerate at least 4 hours before serving. Transfer to a serving dish and serve.
  4. Make ahead tip: This is a perfect make ahead recipe! It needs to be refrigerated 4 hours before serving, but you can make it up to 48 hours in advance. No re-heating is necessary, just transfer straight to a serving dish and enjoy.
